IPC 03 · Long Beach, California (USA) · 1989

The Third International Polychaete Conference took place from August 6–11, 1989, on the sunny campus of California State University, Long Beach. Convened by Dr. Donald J. Reish, the conference brought together 112 scientists from around the world for four lively days of talks, posters, and conversations about all things polychaete. Topics ranged from species descriptions to environmental applications, reflecting the field’s expanding scope. A highlight was the pre-conference workshop on systematics and phylogeny led by Dr. Pat Hutchings, setting the tone for rich scientific exchange. Participants enjoyed mid-week excursions to Catalina Island, SeaWorld, or Los Angeles’ top marine museums. The spirit of community was strong, and campus housing helped spark spontaneous discussions that extended well beyond the lecture halls. The proceedings, published in the Bulletin of Marine Science, included 40 peer-reviewed papers and 43 additional abstracts. During the business meeting, Dr. J. David George was elected as the new IPA President, and Dr. Marian Pettibone was honored with the title of Honorary President.
